The Project Unveiled by Prince Harry in Folkestone in August 2014, Goose Foot and sister company m-tec were commissioned by the educational charity Step Short to manufacture the iconic stainless steel arch and bespoke seating. Designed by architectural design company Foster Gearing, the project marks the centenary of the outbreak of World War 1. Graham Wood, Divisional Manager of Goose Foot Street Furniture Ltd, said: “We are honoured to be a part of the project, as it’s such a special way to remember those who sacrificed so much for us during the War. “The benches are completely bespoke and we are proud to have manufactured them as they will be used by so many people who visit to commemorate the soldiers.”
The Outcome To accompany the iconic arch, Goose Foot designed and manufactured the bespoke seating using marine grade 316 stainless steel and Iroko slats to fit seamlessly into the recesses. The benches create a timeless feature within the town centre and blend into the surroundings perfectly. The project marks the route taken by many of the men, a large number of whom would not return, marching down the Road of Remembrance to board the ships. Thousands of people turned out for the ceremony to commemorate the millions of men and women who travelled to and from the Western Front during the 1914-18 conflict. The project was delivered to international property company Lend Lease ahead of schedule. Damian Collins, MP for Folkestone and Hythe and Chairman of Step Short, attended the ceremony and said: “I would like to thank the organisations involved in building the arch, in particular the WEC Group from Darwen in Lancashire, who constructed the arch and benches.”
